Rosedale Close, SE2

Place Name

Named after the former Cistercian nunnery Rosedale Priory, which was founded sometime before 1158 in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire. The priory was closed down in 1536 under the Dissolution of the Monasteries and the buildings left to decay. What remained was eventually dismantled in the 19thCentury. This road and many others in the area are named after former religious houses around the British Isles in a reference to the ruins of nearby Lesnes Abbey, after which Abbey Wood is named.
