Ropery Street, E3

Place Name

This is a revival of an older street name, recalling as it does the fact that this was laid out over a former rope walk belonging to John Soanes, Son and Co, rope, line and twine manufacturers of 18 Broad Street, Ratcliff, and Bow Common Lane. The land was bought in 1841 for the City of London and Tower Hamlets cemetery and called South Grove. But in 1882 it returned to its original name.
