Place Name
Originally Rock’s Lane and named after a local resident Thomas Rock (died in 1811). Rock was a dealer in silks and, according to R C Gill in Street Names of Barnes, Mortlake & East Sheen, his name appears in parish records in connection with Elm Grove House. The southern section of the road, that continues over Barnes Common dates from the time that Hammersmith Bridge was being built in 1827, after residents in the village protested at plans to build over the pond.
