Pyrland Road, TW10

Place Name

The original Pyrland Road ran in a straight line, parallel to Park Hill, from Queen’s Road to Grove Road as part of land given to the Vestry, the prototype parish council, by George III in 1786. Development began by 1863 with rows of villas being laid out. Today only the middle section continues along the old course, since it was redeveloped in the 1980s by the Richmond Parish Lands Charity. Where the name come from is uncertain, however there is a Pyrland Hall, near Taunton, in Somerset.
