Place Name
The name comes from a shortening of Popinjay Court, a reference to the parrot that features on the crest of Cirencester Abbey whose town house was here from 1325. Originally Le Popyngaye, it mutated down the decades to Popping’s Alley which led to Popping’s Court. By 1798 the alley had become plain Popping’s Court by 1868 it had taken its present spelling.
