Pond Square, N6

Place Name

Although today there is no obvious body of water to which the name may refer, there was in fact a reservoir nearby until it was filled in. This formed part of the New River Company’s water works, until 1864 when it was  covered over, on Highgate West Hill. It was here in 1626 that Francis Bacon carried out an experiment to preserve a chicken by stuffing it with snow. He subsequently died of pneumonia.
