Pilgrim Street, EC4M

Place Name

The origin of this name is uncertain but one theory suggests it is close to where pilgrims heading to St Paul’s Cathedral disembarked at a landing stage on the River Fleet. Sheila Fairfield in The Streets of London is not convinced, believing the name, which was first recorded in 1799, is too late to have a religious connotation. In 1746 it featured as Stonecutters Alley and in 1758 as Little Bridge Street.
