Paynesfield Avenue, SW14

Place Name

Paynesfield House, also spelt Painesfield, was built by William Sawrey Gilpin, the landscape gardener and artist, in 1830 and he lived there until his death. He named it after the former landowner a Mr Paine, who came from a prominent local family, and ran his landscaping business from it. The street was laid out and named in 1901, the house itself was knocked down in 1933.
