Osier Way, E10

Place Name

Refers to the osier beds that were nearby close to the banks of the River Lea. Osiers were particularly useful for their robust leafs that could be weaved and dried to create household items, hence their other name the basket willow. The name itself comes from late Middle English, and is of French and Latin origin, compare the Medieval Latin auseria meaning osier bed. This is a relatively new development built as part of works by the Waltham Forest Housing Action Trust between 1995 – 2001 on the site of Oliver Close Council estate. The roads on the estate were named after trees, Palm Close, Magnolia Close, Larch Road, and Walnut Road are close by.
