Oaklands Avenue, BR4

Place Name

The name, like many in this part of Bromley, on what was the Kent – Surrey border, alludes to this area being heavily forested prior to development. The road was laid out in the early 20thCentury over a former field on the edge of Springpark Wood. Like the nearby West Wickham Common, its oak trees were likely pollarded, meaning the branches have been harvested beyond the reach of grazing animals to provide firewood and leafy forage for cattle and sheep.
