Place Name

Until the coming of the railway and the ensuing development at the end of the 19thCentury, Thornton Heath was known for its market gardens with fruit and vegetables grown on a commercial scale. At one time there were 134 acres of agricultural land being between Collier’s Water Lane and Bensham Lane, and another 87 acres in the Beulah area. The area was dotted with nurseries to cultivate the young plants.
