Place Name

The main road between Harrow and Northolt. Northolt means a northern nook and was first recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Charter as œt norðhealum in AD960 by the time of the Domesday Book of 1086 it was being written as Northala and by the late 16thCentury as Northold in 1593. It took its modern spelling in 1631 as Northall alias Northolt. The name derives from the Old English words Nord (North) and h(e)alh meaning a nook of land. The addition of North distinguishing it from the nearby Southall, the hall also meaning a nook of land.
