North Tenter Street, E1

Place Name

Previously called Tenter Street North. This is one of four streets, the others being East Tenter Street, South Tenter Street and West Tenter Street that form a square. They are all named after the ancient practice of stretching and dying cloth during manufacture. Tender comes from the Middle English word teinter which was the wooden frame on which the cloth is stretched – and from where we get the phrase on tenterhooks.
