Place Name

The name Newham was established in 1965 when Greater London was created, representing a combination of East Ham and West Ham. The word ham or hamm is a Saxon word and means a settlement within the bend of a river. It was previously called the East Ham and Barking By-Pass, prior to that it was agricultural land.
