Commemorating the naval battle of Navarino which was fought on October 20, 1827, during the Greek War of Independence (1821 – 1832), in Navarino Bay (modern Pylos). The British, French and Russian ships under Vice-Admiral Codrington decisively defeated Ottoman and Egyptian forces trying to suppress the Greeks. It was the last major naval battle in history to be fought entirely with sailing ships. Navarino Road adjoins.
