Place Name

This is adjacent to Ravensbury Park. Means the hill by marshes, albeit a slight rise between the valleys of Beverley Brook and the River Wandle. It was recorded in Anglo-Saxon times as Mordune in AD969. In the aftermath of the Norman Conquest it was written as Mordone in the Domesday Book of 1086 and later Moreden in 1204. From the Old English words mōr and dūn.
