Montem Road, SE23

Place name

Derived from the Latin, ad montem meaning to the hill. Remarkably up until 1844 there was a Montem Festival held by the boys of Eton College who would dress up in fancy costumes and head to Salt Hill, a mound near Slough, demanding money from bystanders. The funds collected covered the expenses of the Senior Colleger known as the Captain of the Montem, at Kings College, Cambridge. There is also a Montem Street in Islington and a Montem Road in New Malden.
