Mincing Lane, EC3M

Place Name

This refers to the convent of nuns known in the middle ages as minchins or mynecen, this was the feminine of munuc, from where the word monk comes. The street name is far earlier than the founding of St Helen’s Bishopgate, the nunnery which used to hold property here prior to 1455, to which it is usually affiliated. The first reference was used in 1189 as Mengenelane and Menechinelane in 1274.
