Maryland Road, E15

Place Name

Named after the US state. It was originally a hamlet, which had grown up around a large house built by a merchant who had made his fortune in the New World and named this area Maryland Point. Maryland itself was named following a charter that Lord Baltimore received from King Charles I calling the new colony to be called Maryland in honour of his wife Queen Henrietta Maria (Queen Mary). The Stratford name was first recorded in the 17thCentury and appeared on the Ordnance Survey map of 1805.
