Place Name
This was originally a hamlet on the Hackney – Bethnal Green border and indeed means a boundary by a paved road as first recorded in 1443 as Merestret. The Old English word mǣre meaning a boundary or alternatively, mere, a large pond which was fed by Hackney Brook.
