Lych Gate Road, BR6

Place Name

This was a footpath leading to the ancient All Saints Church, which was first endowed by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1173. The church itself was much modified by the Victorians and a lych gate was built in 1879. This was a roofed gateway to a churchyard, which was used at burials for sheltering a coffin until the clergyman’s arrival.
