Luxted Road, BR6

Place Name

The hamlet of Luxted, near Downe, was first mentioned in the records at the time of Edward II, it is thought to mean a place with an enclosure. It was written as Luckestehel in 1317 and comes from the Old English lūce meaning lock and stede meaning homestead. By 1308 it was Lostede and featured on maps as Luxsted by 1778.
