Lower Ham Road, KT2

Place Name

The main road that follows the River Thames, leading from Kingston-Upon-Thames to the village of Ham. The name itself (like East and West Ham in Newham) comes from the Old English word Hamm meaning for settlement in the bend of a river, in this case the River Thames. It was first recorded as Hama sometime around 1150, with Hamme (1154) and Hammes (1235), taking on its modern spelling in documents as early as 1532.
