Love Lane, EC2V

Place Name

First recorded in 1336 as Lovelane but was featured as Lone Lane in Ralph Agas’s woodcut map of London from 1561. Writing in 1598, John Stow explained it was so-called because it was infested by wantons, so prostitution may have been a factor as it was with other Love Lanes around London and in towns and cities around the country.
