Longfield Drive, SW14

Place Name

Field name. Originally built as a private drive in 1878 serving three cottages Longfield; Manaton (later The Close); and Hindley Cottage (later Sheen Croft). It came into public use in 1938, the name itself goes back much earlier. Charles Hailstone in the Alleyways of Mortlake and East Sheen explains: “The triangle of land between East Sheen Common and the Upper Richmond Road traversed by the footpath and now by Sheen Common Drive was earlier known as The Gore from its shape. Near its eastern end the footpath bisected the Long Field, hence Longfield Drive and the house called Longfield. Proceeding west the land on the north side was The Rough Field and the nine acres on the south side was Broom Field.”
