Loddiges Road, E9

Place Name

Named after Joachim Conrad Loddiges, originally from Germany he bought a nursery-garden here in 1771. He specialised in cultivating exotic plants, among them rhubarb, and acclimatising them to grow in British gardens. The nursery continued as an important breeding centre for introduced species until around 1850 under the guidance Loddiges’s son George.
