Maisie Brown in Barnes and Mortlake Past writes: “In the early 1920s, the squalid cottages huddled behind Barnes Terrace were demolished and replaced by Terrace Gardens and Lime Avenue, the first council housing in Barnes.” The name was probably a reflection of the trees that grew around here as it was laid out over Edward Burree’s market garden grounds and greenhouses. Not far away is Limes Field Road, laid out over land between the High Street and Worple Way, where an avenue of limes ran from Lime House through the field until they were cut down in 1896 for residential development.
