Leinster Avenue, SW14

Place Name

Named after a former house that stood on this site that was knocked down in 1930 to make way for Eastbourne Gardens. Leinster House was built for successful coal merchant Richard F Stratton and stood on the north side of St Leonard’s Road. The name may have been a coincidence but the Fitzgerald family who owned large tracts of Mortlake and were members of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy held among their titles the duchy of Leinster. Leinster Avenue was laid out in 1904.
