Place Name

After Richard Leigh, who was the leaseholder of Bexley Manor House around 1836 or possibly after John Leigh, of Addington, who was Lord of the Manor of East Wickham, inheriting the title via his wife, the daughter John Olyffe, Esq. Alderman of London. The Leigh family held onto the title for 160 years until the death in 1737 of Sir John Leigh, when following a lawsuit it was transferred in 1742 to Mary Bennett, wife of John Bennett, and Anne Spencer, wife of Henry Spencer, daughters of Wooley Leigh, the younger brother of the Sir John.
