Place Name

Named after the Tibetan town of Lhasa, near Mount Everest. Lhasa literally translates to “place of gods” in the Tibetan language. The mountain itself was named after Colonel Sir George Everest, Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843, who studied and also taught exploration at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich in the mid-19thCentury.
