Place Name
Named after Sir John Kirkland (1796 – 1871), an army agent, providing a banking service to soldiers and their families, and was also military agent to Prince Albert. He was knighted at the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1838. In August 1861 he bought Black Fen Farm, a substantial residence. He named the estate Queen’s Wood. At the same time he purchased adjoining farmland towards Avery Hill and Days Lane Farm to the south. He is recorded as having been awarded part of the compensation for enslaved people on Enfield estate in Westmoreland Jamaica, probably as trustee.
