Vienna-born Sir Jules Thorn (February 7, 1899 – December 12, 1980) was the founder of Thorn Electrical Industries, one of the UK’s largest electrical businesses, which was based in Edmonton, shortly after he moved to England as a salesman for Olso, an Austrian manufacturer of gas mantles. When Olso went bankrupt in 1926 Thorn set up his own business called the Electric Lamp Service Company. By 1936 he diversified into manufacturing and expanded the company, which eventually grew to take in among others Rumbelows (electrical goods), Tricity (cookers and fridges), and Kenwood (food mixers).
