Place Name

Directional, the road leading from Surbiton to Hook. First recorded in 1227 as Hoke, which was a reference to a hook shaped parcel of land, most probably a description of the parish which is elongated north to south with a curved tip at the northern end. A few years later, in 1235, it was La Hoke. By 1312 it was recorded as Houke but it took it took today’s spelling as early as 1680. From the Old English word hōc.
