Homerton Road, E9

Place Name

This was being laid out across Hackney Marsh at the turn of the 20thCentury linking Stratford with Hackney across the River Lea. A D Mills in A Dictionary of London Place Name says that the origins of the name Homerton go back to before 1343 when the area was recorded as Humburton meaning Hünburh’s farm or estate. What makes it unusual, given the time, is that Hünburh was an Anglo-Saxon woman. Sheila Fairfield however say the origins of the area are much older dating back to the 10thCentury when it was called Hummington, meaning Humma’s people.
