Holt Way, IG7

Place Name

A holt in this instance could mean one of two things, it is either a reference to the den of a beaver, since there are several streets in the area, including the adjacent Burrow Road, named after the habitations of forest dwelling animals. Or it could be from the Old English word meaning a wood or wooded hill, given the elevation of the site. Either way it owes its name to the medieval Hainault Forest which up until its disaforestation in 1851 covered this area. The street was laid out in the second half of the 20thCentury.
