Hollies Avenue, DA15

Place Name

Named after the substantial villa that was built on the site of a Tudor mansion called Marrowbon or Marrowbone Hall in 1853 – 1854 for the Lewin family, who purchased an estate at Halfway Street sometime around 1782. A map of 1799 has the house recorded as Bone Hall but the name was probably changed to The Hollies sometime around 1810 following Richard Lewin’s death. In 1899 the house was sold and became a children’s home.
