Place Name
The local area of Holders Hill is named after Roger le Holdere, a 13thCentury landowner who featured in local records in 1294. By 1584 the area was being referred to as Oldershyll, but within a century that had become Holears Hill and the modern spelling of the name was featured in documents in 1750. In A Dictionary of English Surnames, PH Reaney and RM Wilson say the name is a derivative of Old English haldan meaning to hold “an occupier, possessor, probably a tenant of occupier of land”.
