Hoe Street, E17

Place Name

For a short while called Greenleaf Lane and renamed Hoe Street North in 1887. The name was first mentioned in 1513 as Holstrete which the Walthamstow Antiquarian Society book of place names published in 1930 says “is almost certainly an error for Hoestrete”. By 1697 it was being written as Hoe Street but in 1774 it was written How Street. In any case the name derives from the Anglo-Saxon word hōh meaning a ridge or spur of land: “A suitable name for the ground rising from the marshes of the Lea to Beulah Road and dropping steeply to Forest Road, after which the continuation of Hoe Street becomes Chingford Road.”
