Hide Road, HA1

Place Name

William Hide was the fifth headmaster of Harrow School, a position he held for an impressive 33 years serving between 1628 and October 1661. It was during his tenure that he managed to convince the governors to provide a house for himself and future headmasters, up until then headmasters had to content themselves rooms in the main school building, However having secured the property in 1651 he remained in it until long after he left the school – resulting in his three immediate successors having to find a property of their own. He was eventually kicked out or died in 1685. This is one of a number of streets named after former headmasters and prominent figures of Harrow School.
