Place Name
This remembers Sir John Heron (1470 – 1521) and his family who held the Aldersbrook estate for some time. Sir John, an English courtier who was born in Hackney, also held lands in Wanstead and it is said brought herons to the area. He came to prominence as Treasurer of the Chamber under Henry VII and Henry VIII between 1492 and 1521. Shortly before his death he was in charge of the financial arrangements for the Field of the Cloth of Gold, a huge diplomatic initiative to celebrate peace between England and France.
