Henniker Road, E15

Place Name

Named after John Henniker, 1st Baron Henniker (June 15, 1724 – April 18, 1803), a leather and furs merchant who was appointed High Sheriff of Essex before becoming an MP. He owned large tracts of land in the area and the family seat was his Stratford House, The Grove, “a substantial mansion with a uniform front”, that has been traced back to the early 18thCentury. When the railway was built close by, the house ceased to be attractive as a gentleman’s residence and it was demolished in the late 19thCentury, when Great Eastern Road was built across its site.
