In January 1916, less than two years into World War One, the British Government introduced conscription into the armed forces. Harry Zeital, who along with his cousin Morris was living in the East End, was eligible to be drafted. But as a Jew who had been persecuted in Russia and a committed socialist he objected to war and refused to go, and as a result was imprisoned.
