Hale End Road, E4

Place Name

So-named after the local area, Hale End, which was first recorded as la Hale in 1285 and The Hale in documents from 1517. It means a corner of land at the far end of the parish, which in this case was Walthamstow. In the 17thCentury the area was also known as Woodend on account of its closeness to Epping Forest.
