Place Name

Directional. John Field in Place-Names of Greater London gives two possible interpretations of the name Haggerston, the first, taken from the Domesday survey of 1086 in which it is spelt Hergotestane suggests the area was named after the stone of a Viking, named Hærgõd. The second, using the original tūn ending, the Old English for a farm means Hærgõd’s farm.
