Hackney Road, E1

Place Name

Directional, this road leads to Hackney. The name Hackney is thought to come from Haca’s Island, meaning dry land among the marshes that dominated the area up until about the start of the 19thCentury. It was first referenced in 1198 as Hakeneia. Over the centuries the name mutated through various spellings including Hackeneye, in 1242 and Hackeneye in 1253 before settling on the contemporary spelling in 1535. There is also the suggestion that the first part of the name is a corruption of the Old English word haca, meaning a hook-shaped plot of land.
