Gourock Road, SE9

Place Name

Named after Gourock, a town falling within the Inverclyde council area and formerly forming a burgh of the county of Renfrew in the West of Scotland. The name itself may come from the River Gour, meaning goat or possibly from a Gaelic word for pimple, in reference to the hill above the town. Many of the roads around Eltham Park are named after places in Scotland, the homeland of its developer Archibald Cameron Corbett, 1st Baron Rowallan, a Scottish Liberal Party and Liberal Unionist Party politician, who being a teetotaller did not allow any pubs to be built in the area.
