Place Name

Named after the Anglo-Saxon leaseholder Godwine Fot – or Godwin Foot – who held the property from before the Norman Conquest of 1066. He leased the land from King Edward the Confessor. It was Godwine who gave Foot’s Cray its name. Cray meaning fresh clean water.
