Place Name
Until at least Elizabethan times this road was known as Theven Lane, on account of the criminal underworld who lived here. It served as a stark warning for unwary travelers. By 1700 it was given a makeover and initially renamed Globe Lane, after the Old Globe public house that was built at the junction with Mile End Road.
