Gallions Close, IG11

Place Name

Named after Gallions Cottages which were owned by John and Richard Galyon or Galyan as lords of the manor, sometime around 1330. They also gave their name to the nearby Gallions Reach, a stretch of the River Thames which was first marked on a map of its course in 1588 as Gallion Reache. The name was no doubt inspired by the fact that it comes off of Thames Road.
