Forty Hill, EN1

Place Name

Although first recorded as Fortey sometime around 1350, the origins of this name, go back much further to the Anglo-Saxon word forth-ēg meaning the island (of higher ground) in marsh. By 1610 it was recorded as Fortyehill, Fortie hill in 1619 and Fortee hill in 1686. It was recorded Forty Green on Morden’s Map of Middlesex in 1695 having previously been called both Forty Hill and Forty Greene in 1572.
